Is It Good to Blow AC Every Day in Malaysia? TCM: Cold Pathogen Enters Directly When Pores Are Open; AC is "Man-Made Cold"

In Malaysia, air conditioning (AC) is hardly a "luxury"—it's a "necessity of life." Offices, shopping malls, cars, bedrooms—24-hour non-stop AC is the norm for many. Some even say, "Without AC, you simply can't survive in Malaysia."

But if you ask a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner, the answer is much more complex. AC does have its "emergency" value—preventing heatstroke during extreme summer heat. But what is AC essentially? It is man-made cold. It strikes you at the very moment you shouldn't be exposed to cold—when your pores are wide open and you are sweating profusely.

"When it is cold, the skin is tense and the pores are closed; when it is hot, the skin is relaxed and the pores are open. How does the thief wind and evil Qi enter? ... It must enter because the pores are open. Its entry is deep, its internal illness is extreme, and it strikes suddenly and violently."

Lingshu (Spiritual Pivot)

Translated: When it's hot, the skin relaxes and pores open up. If there is a "thief wind or evil Qi" at this time—and AC is a typical thief wind—it will drive straight in while the pores are wide open. It penetrates deeply, and the illness comes fast and fierce.

AC is Not Natural Cold, but "Man-Made Cold"

Nature has four seasons. The human body's striae (pores and muscle textures) and Wei Qi (defensive Qi) naturally adjust their opening and closing according to seasonal changes: opening in summer to dissipate heat, closing in winter to preserve warmth.

But AC disrupts this natural rhythm. Outside in Malaysia, it is over 30 degrees hot and humid; your pores are fully open, and Wei Qi is busy dissipating heat. Suddenly stepping into an AC room below 20 degrees—this temperature difference doesn't happen in nature. The ancients never had to deal with a "man-made winter indoors during summer."

From a TCM perspective, AC belongs to "man-made cold." Its cold nature is real, but it lacks the natural order of the four seasons, so it often harms people when they should be "open" but are forced "closed," or "dissipating" but forced to "contract." This is exactly the most harmful timing.

The Benefits of AC: A Stopgap, Not Useless

The Suwen describes heatstroke as the body being like "burning charcoal." In Malaysia's extreme, muggy weather, sometimes sweat cannot evaporate. Damp-heat wraps around the body, making one irritable, dizzy, or close to heatstroke. At this time, AC can cool you down quickly and restore your clarity and spirit.

However, TCM principles emphasize avoiding cold when possible. AC can be used, but it should only be a stopgap measure, not the norm. Treating it as the "default state" of daily life is where problems begin.

Four "Charges" Against AC

1. Cold Invades Directly When Pores Are Open
In Malaysia, you are almost always in a state where your "pores are open." Walking into an AC room covered in sweat is like rolling out a red carpet for cold pathogens. Mild cases lead to immediate sneezing, runny nose, and headaches; severe cases allow cold to strike the meridians directly, leading to chronic fear of wind and cold.

2. Yang Qi Suppressed, Summer-Dampness Trapped Inside
In a hot environment, the body should expel summer-dampness. AC slams the pores shut, preventing sweat from escaping—trapping the heat and dampness inside. TCM calls this "external cold with internal heat." Initial symptoms include chest tightness, bloating, poor appetite, sticky stools, and lethargy.

3. Wei Qi Injured, Vital Qi Weakened Daily
Wei Qi is your body's "defense wall" and "thermostat." Constantly adjusting between "hot outside and cold inside" eventually depletes Wei Qi. This leads to the commonly known "AC disease": stiff shoulders, weak limbs, recurrent colds, and spontaneous cold sweats.

4. Cold and Dampness Combine, Triggering Bi-Syndromes
Malaysia's air humidity is extremely high. Wind from the AC vent, low temperatures (cold), and moisture in the air (dampness)—these three combine to form "Bi-syndrome" (painful obstruction). Those working in AC rooms long-term often experience stiff necks, back pain, and cold knees.

(FAQ) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which is less harmful: AC or a fan?

A fan also generates "thief wind," but it doesn't lower the room temperature, thus avoiding "man-made cold." TCM suggests setting the AC above 26°C while using a fan for circulation is much better than blasting freezing AC directly at yourself.

Why do some people handle AC fine, but I get headaches?

This relates to the strength of your Wei Qi. Those with strong Wei Qi can adapt quickly to temperature changes. If AC instantly gives you a headache or stiff neck, your Wei Qi is weak, signaling a need for regulation.

What if AC has already caused me shoulder and neck pain?

Short-term solutions include warm compresses, ginger-jujube tea, or moxibustion on acupoints like Dazhui and Jianjing. If chronic, TCM regulation is needed to dispel cold-dampness, unblock meridians, and consolidate Wei Qi.
