In Malaysia, fruits are incredibly accessible. Bananas, papayas, dragon fruits, watermelons, pineapples—they are available all year round, cheap, and fresh. Many people are taught from a young age that "eating fruit every day is necessary for health." A plate of fruit after a meal is standard, and some even replace their entire breakfast with a bowl of fruit salad.
But if you ask a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner, the answer might be quite different.
"Five grains for nourishment, five fruits for assistance, five animals for benefit, five vegetables for filling."
Huangdi Neijing (Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor)
Nourishment means to sustain; assistance means to support. Grains are the main force sustaining human life, while fruits are merely supplementary. Zhang Jingyue of the Ming Dynasty specifically annotated this in Leijing: "The five fruits... each has its own nutritional benefit, but they are only to be considered as assistants."
"Only considered as assistants"—they are just supporting roles, do not treat them as the main characters.
Why Do Modern People Easily Develop Issues from Eating Fruit?
The problem lies in two words: overconsumption and wrong timing.
In ancient times, fruit consumption was limited by variety and seasonality. But today in Malaysia, supermarkets are filled with imported fruits all year round, alongside ready-cut frozen fruit platters. Coupled with trendy concepts like "fruit detox" and "fruit weight loss," modern people consume far more fruit than their ancestors, often entirely disregarding their body constitution.
More importantly, most common fruits are cold and cooling in nature. Wang Shixiong of the Qing Dynasty clearly listed the properties and contraindications of common fruits in his Dietetic Manual of the Suixiju:
Apple: Sweet, cooling; excessive intake "promotes dampness".
Pear: Sweet, cooling; "taboo for those with cold-deficient spleen/stomach and chronic diarrhea".
Plum: Sweet, sour, cooling; excessive intake "promotes dampness and phlegm".
Banana: Sweet, cold; excessive intake causes "gastrointestinal dysfunction".
Take Malaysia for example: bananas, dragon fruits, watermelons, papayas, and starfruits—are all cooling or cold in nature. Although durian is "extremely hot," excessive consumption promotes dampness and phlegm, which also harms the spleen and stomach. Mangosteen, the "queen of fruits" known to neutralize durian's heat, is itself sweet and cold.
TCM states that "the spleen prefers warmth and dislikes dampness." The spleen and stomach act as the hub of the digestive system, thriving in a warm and dry environment, and are highly vulnerable to cold and damp elements. Consuming cold fruits is like pouring cold water on the "stove" of your spleen and stomach—the fire weakens, and the food cannot be "cooked." Unprocessed food turns into turbid dampness stuck in the body, leading to bloating, loose stools, excessive phlegm, a bland taste in the mouth, and body heaviness.
Who Should Be Extra Careful When Eating Fruit?
Because everyone's body constitution and current stage of illness vary, do not blindly follow popular dietary habits. The following groups should be highly cautious:
Those with Spleen/Stomach Deficiency-Cold: Easily feel cold, have cold hands and feet, soft or unformed stools, and feel uncomfortable after eating cold things. Avoid cooling fruits; if necessary, steam them or pair them with warm ingredients.
Those with Heavy Phlegm-Dampness: Have a thick white or greasy tongue coating, are prone to edema, or constantly feel phlegm in the throat. Fruits are mostly sweet, and "sweetness generates dampness," increasing phlegm production.
Postpartum Women, the Elderly, and Children: Their spleen and stomach functions are typically weaker or not fully developed. The intake of raw, cold fruits should be strictly controlled.
Common Pitfalls When Eating Fruit
Eating on an empty stomach: Eating raw and cold fruits first thing in the morning directly stimulates the stomach lining, damaging stomach Qi over time.
Eating immediately after a meal: "Post-meal fruits" add an extra cold burden to an already fully loaded digestive system. Fruits mix with meals, fermenting and producing gas, leading to bloating and acid reflux. Wait at least an hour after eating.
Replacing meals with fruit: Long-term replacement of grains with fruits damages Spleen Yang. Many experience severe rebound weight gain after initial weight loss because their metabolic rate has been suppressed by the "cold."
Treating fruit as a "detox miracle": For those with deficient-cold spleen and stomach, ingesting large amounts of cold fruit is not detoxifying; it's practically "poisoning."
How to Eat Safely Without Harming the Spleen and Stomach?
Pair cold fruits with warm ingredients: Steam bananas, boil pears with ginger slices, or sprinkle a little cinnamon powder on dragon fruit.
One portion a day is enough: One apple, one orange, or half a banana—this is a reasonable limit for "assistance."
Check your tongue: When the tongue coating is white, thick, and greasy, pause all raw and cold fruits until the coating clears.
Fruits cannot replace vegetables: Vegetables are mostly cooked, which reduces their cold nature, unlike fruits which are mostly eaten raw.
